Today’s short post deals with an obviously political 1808 painting by Francisco Goya. “Third of May,” shown above, depicts the massacre of the Spanish freedom fighters by the French. This graphic painting displays the harsh realities of war as seen by Goya. Many other graphic paintings were produced in response to wars throughout history- some of which we will focus on in later posts.
The artist is seen again as having a political voice through art. In the case of Goya it was expressing his feelings about the lives lost on the third of May.
